The visual similarities between this image of Tlaloc and the stone statue of Huehueteotl found in the Templo Mayor are simple but very important. Tlaloc wears his typical round "goggle" mask over the eyes, and fangs over the mouth. These same fangs are repeated multiple times in the statue of Huehueteotl; not only over the mouth but also over the elbows and knees of the seated figure. Such a strong association with a water deity may seem odd given Huehueteotl's association with fire; but considerd in the context of the Templo Mayor and the numerous devotional caches to Tlaloc, finding such aquatic symbols on Huehueteotl fits in with the environement.
